Paper in the making

Columbus Day: An Important National Holiday
Annotated Bibliography

Barron, James. "What Did Columbus Do To Deserve a Big Parade?" Nelli York Times 15 Oct.
1991: 1. Academic Search Complete. Web. 1 Mar. 2010.
The article is good because it gives a lot of different perspectives concerning the debate
for and against Columbus Day. It also discusses what little we know about Columbus.
The disadvantages are it does not contain too many facts. Overall the article is important
for the research paper because it gives public opinions and puts into light what little we
know about Columbus.
Dor-Ner, Zvi. Columbus and the Age of Discovery. New York: William Morrow and
Company, 1991. Print.
The book contains mostly background information on Columbus and his encounters with
the Native Americans. The book has a strong factual use; however, it lacks opinion on
the debate all together. It will be a resourceful background tool to make a case for
Columbus Day.

Fernadez-Annesto, Felipe. 1492: The Year the World Began. New York: HarperCollins, 2009.
Print.
The book only contains one chapter concerning Columbus. The chapter does not discuss
Native Americans in depth, but it does go into great detail about Columbus's struggle to
get to the new world. Although this book has comparatively very little on Columbus's
treatment of the natives, it covers an aspect that the other sources do not. That is, his
perseverance to find a new route to the east and his struggle to discover more of the
Americas.
Horwitz, Tony. A VoyageLong and Strange. New York: Henry Holt and Company, 2008.
Print.
The book talks about two key points, the reason Columbus Day became a holiday in the
United States and it also addresses the controversy surrounding Columbus Day today.
One disadvantage to this book is that may be too opinionated. Generally however, it is a
very good reference for both background and opinionated fact.
Polk, William R.. The Birth of America. New York: HarperCollins, 2006. Print.
The book has strength about the view of the Europeans toward the Native Americans
during that time period. It gives a more dated to the time perspective of moral right and
wrong. The weakness of this book is that it contains little about Columbus and the
debate of Columbus Day.
Reston, James Jr. Dogs of God New York: Random House, 2005. Print.
The book does not go into dept about Columbus's voyage; however, it goes into great
detail about Spain at the time. It discusses the king and queen's perspective toward
Columbus and his discovery. Little is mentioned about the Native American, but the
book gives evidence of the European ideas and morals at the time. These ideas and
morals will make a good case for Columbus's actions at the time.
Reston, James Jr. "It isn't all about Columbus." USA Today n.d.: Academic Search Complete.
Web. 1 Mar. 2010.
The Article offers a unique solution to the debate. It also discusses the genocides
committed by Columbus. The solution for the debate will make a good point for my
paper. The disadvantage to this article is that it weakens the Columbus Day stance on
keeping it a national holiday.
Reyes, Damaso. "Thousands take to the streets in Spain to protest the legacy of Columbus." NeH
York Amsterdam News 2009: 2. Academic Search Complete. Web. 1 Mar. 2010.
The article discusses the protests in Spain over Columbus. It addresses the changing
nature of his legacy in Spain and around the world. The youth are bringing Columbus
into a new light and want change. The disadvantage to this article is the lack of facts.
"Schools Take Decidedly Different Approaches to Columbus Day 2009." Curriculum Review

child even put Columbus on trail. The article if not presented con-ectly can hurt my
stance.
Weisberger, Bernard A. "Rediscovering the discoverer." American Heritage 1992: 24. Academic
Search Complete. Web. 1 Mar. 2010.
The article talks about the amount of blame Columbus has taken from protesters.
Columbus has been blamed for the past five hundred years of abuse; however, he was
long gone for most of it. It also talks in dept about the debate on Columbus Day and why
it should still be celebrated. Blaming Columbus for over five hundred years of abuse of
natives is unreasonable so it will make a good stance to keep Columbus Day.
